CQMS Hurricane™
"changing the climate in dragline bucket design"

The design of the CQMS Hurricane™ dragline bucket has been awarded a High Commendation at the 2009 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards in the project catagory of Research, Development and Innovation.

Project Category:
Research, Development and Innovation

Overall Award Categories:

  • The Sustainability Award
  • The Innovation Award

Draglines are among the largest machines built by man. The performance enhancements achieved by the new CQMS Hurricane™ dragline bucket are equally as big. The design has been developed through intensive modelling and validation by scale testing. The result is a bucket that provides excellent handling characteristics with unmatched digging performance.

Significant energy reductions have also extended the boundaries of sustainable overburden removal and provided dramatic increased savings to the mine operations.

Specific enhancing features include:

  • Optimised bucket aspect ratio
  • Low stress front ring castings
  • New approach to capacity adjustment
  • Low profile digging edge
  • Blended structural elements
  • New wear component retention system
